“Sulzer and Wetend Technologies launched the hygienic SHS injection pump as a result of a joint product development project ten years ago. The successful collaboration has set a new standard for chemical dosing in the production of paper, board and tissue. Thanks to the chemical mixing system, the need for chemicals has been reduced, the paper producer completely avoids the use of dilution water, and the efficiency of the paper machine is significantly improved. The savings potential of Wetend’s TrumpJet system is 30 percent of the amount of chemicals used without dilution water,” says Sirpa Valimaa, who leads Sulzer's Pulp, Paper & Board business.
Sulzer says the SHS pump, jointly developed by the companies, is a key element of the system, combining the best of Sulzer's rheology and PPI expertise with Wetend's TrumpJet concept. The pump enables the optimal placement of the chemical mixing station just before the headbox, after the machine screen. The pump is low-pulse and has a unique, polished structure that enables the system to operate in a demanding position.

Design prevents fiber spinning
“The unique design of the TrumpJet and SHS pump assembly solves a very specific, yet significant, challenge in the process industry, especially in chemical mixing. The innovative design of the impeller and pump housing allows the pump to be placed close to the headbox without the risk of fiber spinning or sticking when handling fiber-based process fluids. The design prevents the formation of deposits that would otherwise lead to paper web quality defects and web breaks,” says Wetend Technologies Oy’s CEO. Jussi Matula.
High and stable quality for the final product
According to Wetend, high efficiency and fast response in chemical mixing mean that the quality of the production process can be better controlled. In addition, more consistent quality can be produced with less chemical.
“With the TrumpJet mixing station, the simplified process line design means an easier installation phase and improved process cleanliness. When clean water is not needed in the chemical mixing process, the operating costs of water treatment systems are significantly lower,” Matula says.
Partners look ahead
Sulzer and Wetend have developed the SHS pump series for demanding injection applications, and Wetend is the sales organization for the TrumpJet system injection pump. Sulzer has manufactured over 250 SHS pumps for Wetend worldwide.
“Product development collaboration has produced unique solutions and given our end users opportunities to develop their processes and significantly improve the sustainability of their factories,” says Jussi Matula.
"We are pleased with the innovative collaboration and are definitely on the right track. Joint development will continue and we will continue to seek the most effective solutions for our customers," Välimaa promises.
What? In the system developed by Sulzer and partners, the TrumpJet mixing station and SHS pump simplify the process line structure.
Why? TrumpJet technology allows for better mixing of chemicals. When water is not needed, it does not need to be heated to process temperature, which saves significant energy.
