Cutlery made from cellulose fiber.

Environmentally friendly super material made from cellulose

Finnish company Fiberdom has created a unique super material from FSC-certified wood fibers.

The Finnish forest industry is shifting its business towards markets dominated by the plastics industry for decades, as the world desperately needs materials made from renewable raw materials that can replace plastic. Wood fiber is an excellent alternative for this, but current solutions are not yet enough. Challenges include the addition of plastic coatings to materials to improve durability, the inability to recycle biocomposite materials, and the lack of facilities for industrial composting.

Fiberdom's patented technology transforms ordinary commercial pulp or cardboard into a super material that is highly malleable, durable and versatile. The products made from it are completely plastic-free, easily recyclable and even home compostable.

Fiberdom

What: A Finnish company innovating new materials has created a unique super material from FSC-certified wood fibers.

Who: Tomi Järvenpää and his team research, develop and commercialize materials and products manufactured using Fiberdom technology.

Our solution offers the pulp and paper industry a new way to add value to pulp, paper and board products and meet the increasing demands of competition, customers and regulation.

Our first commercial product – disposable cutlery made from Finnish pulp and compostable at home – is already in stores across Finland. We have secured new funding to expand the use of our material into new product groups and applications. We see significant potential, especially in packaging, interior design and furniture. We are working with our domestic and international partners to bring the best pioneers in the industry to the development.
