"We are still wasting good fiber. Only by optimizing the use of wood even better will the industry be able to compete in the future," says Savcor Group's Chairman of the Board, Industrial Advisor Hannu Savisalo.
With the economic recession, the Finnish forest industry is facing big questions. In which direction should we continue, what kind of game should we invest in?
Hannu Savisalo has worked with the forest industry for decades. In his opinion, the re-evaluation of the possibilities of fiber and other wood components, and the many possibilities of dissolving pulp, for example, which has resurfaced, are taking us further and further away from traditional fiber use and current paper machines.
Although the structural change will take decades, the guidelines for the game are already starting to appear.
"All three major forestry companies seem to have thought about their trump cards and the game they can play. Stora Enso focuses on packaging, Metsä Group's business is mainly raw wood reserves with pulp and board, UPM Kymmene seems to be investing in energy, among other things, in addition to paper," Savisalo says.
Savisalo examines the industry's business and the opportunities for growth and change with over three decades of experience. Savcor Group, which is wholly owned by the Savisalo family, has many irons in the fire around the world. Savcor ART strengthens, measures and protects infrastructure from corrosion and undertakes port renovation projects, among other things. Savcor Forest consults and builds software in the forestry sector, Cencorp designs electronics automation systems and is moving towards renewable energies.
The business stems from expertise in electrochemistry, knowledge of materials technology, and IT skills.
“I have learned the most by listening to the customer,” says Savisalo.
