Developments in research

The research and education of Aalto University's Department of Wood Processing Technology benefits the entire forest cluster.

The Department of Wood Processing Technology, located in Otaniemi, Espoo, has its own roots in Finnish forestry expertise and has accumulated many years of experience. The department was established in 1941, and today it is part of Aalto University, which consists of the Helsinki School of Art and Design, the Helsinki School of Economics and the Helsinki University of Technology. The department has 150 employees, 12 of whom are professors. The department graduates approximately 60 master's degrees and an average of seven doctoral degrees each year.

“When looking at master’s and doctoral degrees, we are the leading wood processing technology educator globally. The department received good results in both the external evaluation of Aalto University and the national evaluation of the Academy of Finland. Internationalization has progressed well, we have foreign professors and students. Our knowledge base is broad and our doctoral education is strong,” Head of Department, Professor Tapani Vuorinen says.

He cites bio-based materials and biorefineries as particularly strong research areas. In addition, Aalto University is overall strong in wood construction and architecture.
