Two white porcelain cups are packed in cellulose-based, bubble-shaped packaging foam in a cardboard box.

Bubbles with Benefits

Bubbles with Benefits develops cellulose-based packaging foams and bubble wraps as replacements for plastic packaging materials. The materials differ from other similar materials by offering excellent protection: the air bubbles enclosed in the bubble wraps effectively absorb shocks and the recoverable foam structure of the packaging foams protects even delicate products from damage. The materials are made from renewable raw materials and are recyclable, and they can be customized to the needs of different brands with colors and patterns.

The project has Research to Business funding from Business Finland, which has ensured scalability and commercial potential, and optimized the properties of the materials, so that
The materials would be competitive and truly functional as plastic substitutes. There is great interest in the materials, as companies are looking for substitutes for traditional plastic materials, due to, among other things, tightening packaging legislation and end-customer responsibility requirements.

Since there is already demand for the materials, the goal is to establish a spin-off company from Aalto University next year, which will first scale production in a pilot phase and begin manufacturing and selling the materials to the first customers.

Bubbles with Benefits is currently seeking pre-seed funding to enable rapid growth. Our goal is to make fiber-based barrier materials the new standard in sustainable packaging.
